First and second centuries: baptism was the sign of new life and forgiveness of sins. Baptised people would be forgiven by taking the Eucharist (holy bread) praying AND fasting. Instead of talking to priests THEY WOULD ASK GOD DIRECTLY FOR FORGIVENES. HOWEVER, IF THAT PERSON HAD COMMITTED A SIN THAT WAS EXTREMELY TERRIBLE SUCH AS MURDER, THEY WERE BANNED FROM RECIEVING RECONCILIATION.
